Sharpen and Saturation in GIMP

A common photo error is soft focus and lack of color both due to improper lighting.

Example here is a quick snapshot that could stand some touch up.
Notice how the foreground figure is slightly blurred? Also the color of the
paintings in the background are not as they could be.

First we will sharpen the image using Unsharp Mask Tool
Filters / Enhance / Unsharp Mask

Unsharp Mask will heighten the difference between pixels at any color transitions.


This is what the interface looks like:


Radius - Controls the distance from a transition that the tool will alter.

Amount - Controls the degree to which the tool will alter pixels

Threshold - Controls the range of pixel difference that the tool will either ignore or take notice of. The lower the threshold the more intense the sharpening effect.
